A woman in her 80s was killed by a garbage truck Monday in Lincoln Heights when she apparently fell or walked into its path.

The woman was standing near the corner of Avenue 22 and Broadway near the 5 Freeway at 11:27 a.m. A witness who was waiting for the bus told police he saw the woman on the sidewalk with a cane. He told KCAL9 that it happened so fast, he didn't even see the impact. The driver didn't realize he'd hit a person until the witness informed him, KCAL9 reports.

According to City News Service, the woman died at the scene.

"At this point it appears the trash truck was going through the intersection on a green light, so we're not quite sure what caused the victim to step off the curb," LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman told NBC News.

Investigators are hoping to find more witnesses to the accident. They are inspecting the garbage truck for possible mechanical failure. No arrests have been made.

The victim has not been identified pending family notification. Police says she lives in walking distance from the site of the accident, but so far, no one has inquired about her. She is reported to be in her 80s and of Asian descent.
