Southern California will be getting an early taste of summer with an end-of-the-week heatwave that started Friday.

The coolest areas will be along the coast with temperatures across L.A. County beaches as low as 69 degrees. Orange County beaches will be slightly warmer, with highs from 74 to 84 degrees.

Meanwhile, the Inland Empire, L.A. County and Coachella Valley will be hot. There's a heat advisory for those areas through Saturday night when temperatures will rise to the 90s and even to 100 in some areas. Palm Springs, for example, was expected to reach 104 degrees Friday.

    Tips to stay cool
      • Kiddie pool
      • Lotions in the fridge
      • Eat spicy foods in the basement (or on the floor) while wearing a damp shirt and listening to the rain setting on your white noise machine
      • Make sure ceiling fans are running counterclockwise
      • Wet paper towels. Fold into ankle and wrist cuffs. Freeze. Wear. Repeat.
      • Build a DIY AC
      • Build a mini cold air fan
      • Build an "evaporative cooler for immediate heat relief"
      • Make a barricade of fans and ice cubes
      • Go to an air-conditioned store and browse for as long as possible (Target is a good option for this).
      • Close all the curtains, preferably the heat-absorbing kind
      • Or open all the windows, depending on the breeze situation
      • Cool bath or shower twice a day
      • Wash your sheets before bed but don't dry them — put them on your bed damp (provided you're dealing with a dry heat)
      • Portable A/C unit

    Stay cool and hydrated SoCal!

At LAist, we believe in journalism without censorship and the right of a free press to speak truth to those in power. Our hard-hitting watchdog reporting on local government, climate, and the ongoing housing and homelessness crisis is trustworthy, independent and freely accessible to everyone thanks to the support of readers like you.

But the game has changed: Congress voted to eliminate funding for public media across the country. Here at LAist that means a loss of $1.7 million in our budget every year. We want to assure you that despite growing threats to free press and free speech, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust. Speaking frankly, the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news in our community.

We’re asking you to stand up for independent reporting that will not be silenced. With more individuals like you supporting this public service, we can continue to provide essential coverage for Southern Californians that you can’t find anywhere else. Become a monthly member today to help sustain this mission.

Thank you for your generous support and belief in the value of independent news.
