Last month, there was a great night of performances by singer-songwriters that included Carina Round (MySpace) at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood, as well as Tenlons Fort (MySpace) -- backed by members of Amnion (MySpace), Avi Buffalo (MySpace), Castledoor (MySpace), and The Monolators (MySpace) -- Jenny O. (MySpace), Angela Correa (MySpace), Rachael Cantu (MySpace), and Daniel Ahearn (MySpace) at Mr. T's Bowl (MySpace) in Highland Park. Opening at Mr. T's was rapper Trick Tracy -- aka Castledoor's Brandon Schwartzel.

Loudvine blogged that, "Rather then just go through a hurried set, Carina Round, was part therapist last night, talking about relationships, part word smith, joking with us, about some of the word choices we make in this country, and part comedian, as she just engaged us all. But ultimately, she was a serious performer with a message and fierceness to match her short set."

Meanwhile, LA-Underground, who presented the showcase at Mr. T's, reported that, "The five-band lineup was increased last-minute by a one Trick Tracy... who started the evening right with a little rhyming and two-timing. Friends have been telling us that this little project wasn't a joke and it isn't. It's actually pretty amazing. So amazing we want Brando back for more. And soon... Next up, we were given the gift of Tenlons Fort, the supergroup. Somehow we think T-Fort was always meant to sound that full and lush. It was the best Tenlons Fort show we've ever witnessed, not just because of his friends on stage but because we've never seen humble Jack so at ease, so happy to sing songs. It was perfection... We hear Jenny O. impressed a lot of people last night and we knew she would. Her voice is pretty and her songs are even prettier. A year or two from now when she's on Conan O'Brien she'll all but forget this night. We won't... We think Angela Correa got a little sick on purpose to make her voice all sexy slash whispery, just how we like it. She sang "Saint Dinan" like the old days when it was just us and the bartender keeping her sad, lonely songs company. We could barely look at the stage when she performed and she knows why... When Rachael Cantu takes the stage she owns it. You can't have it. It's hers. When she's done she'll let you know. Until then, look out for those pop hooks she throws out, they're all hits... Daniel Ahearn is just the kind of blue collar everyday guy we all need to have more of in Los Angeles. He's as down-to-earth and sweet as anybody we've ever met and it just so happens he's also a singer-songwriter that writes some of our favorite songs. That combination makes for more than just a good eHarmony profile, it makes for a lovely close to a wonderful evening."

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
