The Ukrainian Culture Center in East Hollywood will host an arts fundraiser this weekend to support humanitarian aid in Ukraine.

Co-organizer Iryna Vasylkova said her parents chose to stay in Ukraine as Russian forces invaded. They’ve had to huddle in bomb shelters as shelling has continued near their home.

“As family members of those going through [this] excruciating experience, we’re doing our best here in L.A. to save our country,” Vasylkova said.

An art exhibit and silent auction opening Saturday will feature the work of L.A. artists, including Yulia Gasio, Lado Goudjabidze, Marlene Greenberg, Juri Koll, Victor Makohonenko, Nik Le Skela and Yuriy Viktiuk.

On Sunday, the culture center will host a classical music concert led by conductor Dr. Maxim Kuzin and violinist Dr. Myroslava Khomik. The program includes the work of Ukrainian composers, including the late Myroslav Skoryk’s “Melody.”

“The beating heart of Ukraine is our language, music and art,” said Vasylkova, adding she believes that if Ukrainians pass their cultural heritage from generation to generation, they can’t be exterminated as a nation.

Organizers say 100% of the proceeds will go to humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
