pissed police - LAPD Chief Bratton is furious over Assembly Bill 1882, which would transfer some airport security duties from the LAPD to the LAX police. But when making his official statement, he tried to be nice, avoiding calling LAX police fumbling idiots. "Why would you trust the security of a major terrorist target to a police force that is made up of many qualified people, but whose training, capabilities and hiring procedures are not up to that of the Los Angeles Police Department?"

strong medicine - Troubled King Drew Medical Center in South LA will face a surprise inspection in the next 3 months — failing any part of the inspection could lead to the loss of federal funding. And without federal funding, LA County would have a hard time keeping it open. Here's hoping King Drew makes the grade at inspection time.

rough for Rocky - City Attorney Rock Delgadillo's campaign for State Attorney General isn't doing so well against opponent Jerry Brown, former Governor and Mayor of Oakland. And now Mayor Sam posts a humiliating before-and-after photo set that seems to show Rocky's teeth have been capped and balding pate has been re-seeded. If the cosmetic touches were to make him more appealing to voters, they're not working; plus, being bald and chubby hasn't hurt Brown at all.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
