It's the Fourth of July, and that means backyard barbecues, rooftop firework show watching, and poolside parties. What it shouldn't mean, however, (and we can't believe we still have to talk about this) is drinking and driving. Unfortunately, there still those who have a few drinks and get behind the wheel. As the National Highway Traffic Safety Association notes, 49% of drivers aged 18 to 34 killed during the 2015 Fourth of July weekend were driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher (which is over the legal limit).

The LAPD will be out in force during the holiday doing their best to stop drunk drivers. What's more, there are options if you've been drinking—public transit is an easy way to traverse the city, or you could leave your car and take a rideshare (i.e. Uber, Lyft, etc.).

And, should you need a final resort, AAA has your back.

The Automobile Club of Southern California will be providing a free towing service from 6 p.m. on July 4th through 6 a.m. on July 5th. The program, called Tipsy Tow, is available to anyone.

"It's not a reservation service. It's meant to be a last resort," Marie Montgomery, a AAA spokeswoman, told KPCC. "We encourage all partygoers to make a plan before they are drinking and find themselves in a situation where they need a ride home."

To use Tipsy Tow, simply call (800) 400-4222.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
