A rare-for-June storm brought thunder, lightning and hail to Southern California on Tuesday, as a low pressure system just off the coast drew tropical moisture up from around Mexico.
Thunder, lightning and hail: More than 160 lightning strikes were recorded between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Pea sized hail and intense downpours are possible across the greater L.A. area.
Gray clouds darkened skies as the afternoon progressed Tuesday, including in Pasadena, bringing thunder and rain to Southern California.

Fire risk: Dry lightning could start fires in grassy areas, as fine fuels have dried out enough to carry flames. Heftier fuels are still holding on to enough moisture that fire is unlikely to spread to them.
The forecast: The muggy weather should resolve by Thursday, as skies clear, humidity drops and temperatures return to the upper 70s.
