Charles Manson's Fiancée Reportedly Wants To Make Money Off His Corpse

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

While we already thought it was weird enough that Charles Manson managed to charm and snag himself a 27-year-old fiancée during his life sentence in prison, we didn't think it would get this bizarre. A journalist is now saying that the only reason Manson's main squeeze wants to marry him is because she's an entrepreneur. Her zany plan reportedly involves her getting ownership of Manson's corpse when he dies one day, then putting his body on public display in a glass case—just like Lenin’s Tomb—and sit back while the morbidly curious pays the big bucks to see his body. Cue in the "she only wanted him for his body" jokes.

Journalist Daniel Simone, who is co-writing The Retrial of Charles Manson book, told the New York Post that the 80-year-old cult leader who once orchestrated a series of murders says he no longer plans on walking down the aisle (not in a church but inside the walls of California State Prison, Corcoran) with his ardent fan Afton Elaine Burton (aka Star). Simone said Manson has "finally realized that he’s been played for a fool." Plus, Manson apparently thinks the whole idea of keeping him in a glass case is stupid because he's immortal and can live forever. Okay...

The couple arranged for a marriage license on Nov. 7, and it was deemed that they would get 90 days to tie the knot. However, the license expired last Thursday without them exchanging what we can only imagine as not-creepy-at-all vows. Burton, who's been living near the prison for the last nine years so she can visit Manson, wrote on her Geocities-like website that she runs on the cult leader that the wedding didn't happen because of "an unexpected interruption in logistics."

Burton added that they plan on renewing the license soon so they can get hitched in the coming months. We'll see about that as the Manson soap opera continues.

Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
