Jonathan Gold Documentary Is Debuting At Sundance
Just two years ago it was announced that Jonathan Gold—the famed L.A.-based writer who also just so happens to be the only food critic to ever win a Pulitzer Prize—would be the subject of a documentary. And now, food lovers, the film's getting its premiere at Sundance next year.
Variety reports that City of Gold will be a contender in the film festival's U.S. Documentary competition. Sundance takes place in Park City, Utah from Jan. 22 to Feb. 1. Sundance described the premise of the documentary: "Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Jonathan Gold casts his light upon a vibrant and growing cultural movement in which he plays the dual roles of high-low priest and culinary geographer of his beloved Los Angeles."
Director Laura Gabbert (No Impact Man) will be helming this feature about Gold, who recently started writing for the L.A. Times after working at L.A. Weekly for years.
"I loved Laura’s film Sunset Story," Gold said in 2012 in a statement about her film on a retirement home in L.A. "So when she approached me about making a film using me as a prism through which to look at food as a prism looking at Los Angeles, it sounded like a good idea. And you wouldn't believe how fetching I look in a burqa."

The culinary critic, who obviously has a great sense of humor, has been taking his readers on food adventures in our sprawling city for decades, exploring different types of cuisines and sampling from restaurants many of us wouldn't have heard of had it not been for him.
