• An arrest has been made in the shooting that took place New Year's eve at a party in a rented mansion in Coldwater Canyon that took the life of a former Valley College basketball player.

• Hard times are about the hit the upper echelon of the LA County court system, as judges face a possible steep cut in their pay.
• More fiscal woes: The Valley Performing Arts Center on the CSUN campus halted construction yesterday due to the state's budget crisis and the funding stall.
• Police in Dana Point dealt with a be-gloved guy acting sketchy and his potentially sketchy package (think mail) at the post office yesterday. Turns out there was no bomb, and his gloves were due to him doing yard work and leaving for the p.o. in a hurry.
• Heads up if you'll be driving in Gardena tonight. Per the Daily Breeze: "Police officers will conduct a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint from 6:30 p.m. today to 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of Rosecrans Avenue at Gramercy Place."

• And it's curtains for actor Bernie Hamilton, who is best remembered as the captain on 70s TV favorite Starsky & Hutch. He died here in Los Angeles on Tuesday at the age of 80.
