"Karo, what the fuck are you doing? There's a code, bro."
On his latest effort, Just Go Talk to Her, comedian Aaron Karo uses this line to imitate his male audience members' reaction to one of his jokes. The truth is, however, that those 11 words sum up the album as accurately as any album review ever could.
In the span of 60 minutes, Karo crushes "the code" on Just Go Talk to Her, revealing the secrets, techniques and moves men have spent a lifetime hiding from females.The native New Yorker who currently resides in LA, didn't give the entire playbook away but he definitely ripped out a handful of pages and sent them over to the other side. Guys, next time that 2 a.m. text message to 10 girls in your contact list falls flat, blame Karo.
Recorded at Boston's Comedy Connection, Just Go Talk to Her is a collection of tightly woven narratives within one larger narrative. A renowned writer, best known for his Ruminations email column, Karo uses various callbacks and references to previous jokes to give the 60 minute recording a thoroughly composed structure and flow. Two things that you don't often find in a comedy album.
The highlight of Just Go Talk to Her, "The Five Stages of a Relationship," captures the evolution of twentysomething love with the accuracy of someone playing Duck Hunt while sitting right in front of the screen. It is this track where we best see Karo's ability to mix his thoughtful observations and theories with tales of debauchery.
These tales of debauchery are the core of the album. A majority of the jokes are about hooking up or getting fucked up. While these two topics may be what Karo knows best, Just Go Talk to Her could have benefited from the comic venturing elsewhere with his material.
When Karo does step away from the liquor and the ladies, he dives into the humor surrounding the relationship he has with his boys, the same boys who will no longer be able to ever meet any of their girlfriend's attractive friends. Thanks.

This guy is a pretty terrible stand-up (so far; I know all standups start off bad). Hack-y material that has been beat into the ground by comedians since time immemorial (men do this, women do that, etc.). But while the good comedians find a unique way of presenting that material, Karo's presentation just seems schticky, like a rip-off of something I can't put my finger on...
That being said, his column on his website that he has been putting out for like 8-10 years is always a good read. It's short, sweet and often concise and witty. I've always enjoyed the writing, but the live stuff was pretty awful in comparison.
I couldn't disagree more with tony flow's comments. I read Karo's Ruminations column as well and I think he's actually BETTER live than on his web site. maybe you have to be between 21 and 31 to get it, but Karo is all about saying everything that we think about when it comes to girls and drinking. it's god damn genius and i laughed my ass off at this album. highly recommended.

Comedy is extremely subjective; people like Larry the Cable Guy too. He is obviously a funny dude. But standup requires more than that.

You're absolutely right, comedy is extremely subjective and I for one love this album. Comparing men to gremlins and drunken baby chicks..it's ingenious if you ask me. He says everything I've been thinking since the day I walked onto campus, and still holds true 5 years later out in the "real world." Not only is the humor there, but so is the intelligence and wit of his column. Karo is a great comedian, unique to our generation, and I'd recommend this to anyone who likes to drink, have fun, and has a sense of humor.
