When Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced last month that he was getting a divorce from his wife of 20 years, we thought it was tacky that many in the press and local blogosphere were demanding that he reveal if the breakup was due to an affair.
We at LAist didn't see how that would be relevant or necessary to disclose since a divorce is an extremely sensitive personal matter whose details should be of no concern to the public.
But then we learned today that the Mayor's chica is Mirthala Salinas, a newswoman for Telemundo, so, yes the press (who probably knew exactly who the Mayor's emotional friend was) was correct in demanding full disclosure since it would be important to see if there was any professional impropriety.
Amid questions whether Salinas reported on the mayor while they were romantically involved, [Mayor Tony] said that about a year ago Salinas "asked to be removed" from her role in the station's political coverage.Bueno? For most it would be, but then someone asked the Mayor if his mamacita was with bambina:Telemundo spokesman Alfredo Richard had said Salinas, a backup anchor and general news correspondent, moved off the political beat, which includes coverage of the mayor, about 11 months ago.
"I believe she did not cover the mayor since her new assignment," Richard said. - Daily News
Asked today whether Salinas -- now an evening anchor for Telemundo, Channel 52 -- is pregnant, Villaraigosa said: "I can tell you emphatically that that question is outrageous and the answer is no, she is not pregnant." - LA TimesMeanwhile LA Observed is reporting that this isn't the first politician that the newswoman has dallied with.

It's shocking that someone who purports to edit a blog about Los Angeles clearly does not give a shit about half the population of this city.
As much as I disagree with certain racist comments being used in this article, the LA mayor is to blame. He brought a disgrace to the Hispanic/Latin population primarily because he is a public figure. Where does he get off (no pun intended) telling the American & Mexican population that this is a private matter and essentially none of our business.
Has he fogetten that he used the public platform specifically 'family values' to be elected into office. Then again, he did forget his own family.

Please, Tony was just doing this for fun. Like I don't use it amongst my co-workers in discussing the story around the water cooler. "Shocking"? Give me a break. The only thing that is shocking is his attempts to hide this. When Hahn divorced, nobody cared because he didn't make a big deal about it. When you call a press conference and throw your two kids from many girlfriends ago out like a "neener neener" move, and refuse to answer questions, YOU are the story. YOU made it happen. You tried to sweep it under the rug by tossing the story during the Hilton sentencing, but then you had to get you mug on camera and pretend that everything is fine. It isn't. Nobody cares about Gavin Newsom's dalliances, because Gavin Newsom is divorced and passing drinks to 20 year old women is not the same ethical dilemma as sleeping with someone who gives the news for the #4 rated news programming in Southern California (after KMEX, KCBS/KCAL, KNBC). If you want us to honor your personal life, let's start by not having press conferences and refusing to answer questions about this.

My mom and I were discussing the same point you brought up -- the fact that Villaraigosa often tried to push the family values technique and this just demonstrates his hypocrisy. In my eyes, cheating is one of the lowest things a person can do to their so-called "significant other" (obviously using the term loosely here), and any person who pulls this sort of crap receives absolutely NO respect from me.
As for all those replies claiming racism and sexism -- oh please. Get a sense of humor and stop being so damn sensitive about comments like those. As a Mexican female writer, I thought Tony's phrases were cleverly used in the article and felt no offense at any point while reading it. People seem to get HIGHLY offended by anything these days, though.
