Eruvs
You may not be aware of it, but you may live within an Eruv. An Eruv can be a thin monofilament wire strung between utility poles and encircling a large area of a city. It physically demarks an extended home for an observant Jew who may then, for example, carry prayer books and keys or push strollers within the Eruv line on the Sabbath, all without violating Jewish law. There are many large Eruvs within the communities of Southern California but last week opposition from the community forced the Agoura Hills/Westlake Village/Oak Park Eruv to be removed. Larry discusses the purpose of the Eruv in the observant Jewish community and the controversy surrounding them with Rabbi David Eliezrie of the Rabbinical Council of Orange County and Brad Greenberg, staff writer for the LA Daily News.
