John Rabe
John Rabe is KPCC and LAist's Production & Promotions Director, a post he assumed in July of 2017 after 35 years behind the mike. His job is to shape the sound of the station.
From 2006 to 2017, John was producer and host of Off-Ramp, twice named the nation's "best local public affairs show." Before that, Rabe was the station's housing & healthcare reporter and local host for "All Things Considered."
Rabe began his career as a commercial DJ in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but he found his niche as reporter and anchor at Michigan State University's public radio station, where he half-heartedly earned his BA in English. Rabe has also worked in public radio in South Florida, Philadelphia, and Minnesota.
Rabe lives with his husband Julian Bermudez, an art gallery owner, and their Irish terrier Eoghan in the foothills of Mt. Washington.

Mainstream blockbuster movies in 3-D are commonplace now, but just a few years ago, they were hard-to-find curiosities. But they’re old hat to the members of the L.A. 3-D Club. Saturday in downtown Los Angeles, the club is hosting its 7th international independent 3-D film festival, with a selection of about 20 long and short features. -
Passover, the observance of the Jews’ escape from Egypt, starts tonite. Most Jews observe it in their homes, but three or four dozen will be gathering, instead, under a tent in the Mojave. They call it the Joshua Tree Passover Village, and the idea, for these Jews, is to get back to their historic and religious roots. The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Carousel” is onstage at UCLA’s Freud Playhouse through February 7. The show opened on Broadway in 1945 and is considered a cornerstone of American musical theatre. This version is being put on by the Reprise theatre company, known for its minimalist approach. "Carousel" director Michael Michetti told KPCC’s John Rabe how that helped focus this production. -

One of the world’s foremost architectural photographers, Julius Shulman of Los Angeles, died Wednesday night. He was 98 years old. -
Julius Shulman, probably Los Angeles' most famous photographer, died Wednesday night at the age of 98. He was most famous for his photos of Modernist architecture, but he photographed all kinds of buildings, and was know for his human approach - he wanted people in his shots. KPCC's John Rabe went to his 95th birthday celebration and filed this report.
