Architecture photographer Julius Shulman dies at 98
One of the world’s foremost architectural photographers, Julius Shulman of Los Angeles, died Wednesday night. He was 98 years old.
At his 95th birthday party, he explained why he chose architecture as his specialty.
Julius Shulman: "We’re involved in architecture from birth to death. You’re born in a hospital most likely designed by an architect. But then when you die: mortuary, designed by an architect. That’s the story of architecture."
Shulman was best known for his photos of mid-century modern houses, but he documented the built environment throughout Southern California, from gas stations to the destruction of the stately old Victorian houses on Bunker Hill.
Shulman’s family says he died peacefully at his Laurel Canyon home.
