Harris announced today that agents seized 1,209 guns from people who are legally barred from having them, including those who are deemed mentally unstable, people with active restraining orders and known gang members. The sweep was the second of its kind, and netted three times as many weapons as the first effort in 2007.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has announced that homicide detectives were dispatched at 7:30 this morning to investigate the death of a Caucasian woman on Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest. No other information about the victim or the circumstances surrounding her death has been released. A mountain lion spotted repeatedly in a Hesperia neighborhood is shy, says residents, and scares easily when approached. KABC reports that the animal has been seen in backyards, and even out on the street while kids are riding their bikes. Because of his timidity, experts believe he's simply looking for food and water.

In our unending effort to be the city onto whom the least blame will fall when the planet implodes with waste, LA officials launched an initiative today that will allow residents to throw empty juice, milk, soup and wine cartons into blue recycling bins. Until today, those wishing to go green could recycle a number of other household products, including plastic, paper, batteries and aluminum beverage containers, among others.

A 12-year-old boy was fatally stabbed outside an apartment building in Anaheim, reports KTLA. The boy, whose name hasn't been released, was found lying on the ground by police officers and was taken to a local trauma center where he later died. He's thought to be a student at nearby Sycamore Junior High.
