After 35 years with the Los Angeles Fire Department, Chief Millage Peaks has announced his retirement. The Daily News reports that Peaks informed executive staff of his decision today.

After filing fraudulent tax returns for 197 people and attempting to collect the refund money for himself, a former social worker for the LA Country Department of Social Services was sentenced today to 46 months in prison. According to a statement issued today by the U.S. Department of Justice, Trang Van Dinh, 63, filled out and sent the returns to the Internal Revenue Service using names and social security numbers to which he had access from his work with the DSS.

A San Diego man has been found guilty of raping and murdering Dane Williams, a 23-year-old man who was working as an intern at sports store Hurley. The the OC Register reports that Philong Huynh, 40, was accused of drugging Williams before sexually assaulting him and then hiding his body, wrapped in a comforter, in an alleyway.

Four birds have tested positive for West Nile Virus after being found dead in Cerritos and the San Gabriel Valley, reports the Daily News. Two of the four birds were discovered in Cerritos, one in Baldwin Park and one in Covina. A fifth bird's test is still pending.

After threatening to go on strike nearly two months ago, grocery workers employed by Ralph's, Albertson's and Vons have found some common ground with their employers as they hammer out the details of their contracts. One person has been killed and two others wounded in a shooting at Penmar Park in Venice, reports the AP. The shooting took place at about 4:10 p.m. One victim died at the scene while the others were taken to a hospital.
