A motorcyclist crashed into a parked car last night, suffering very serious injuries but not harming the people who were sitting in the vehicle, reports the OC Register. The accident happened at about 6:50 p.m. on Newport Boulevard near 26th Street. The motorcyclist, who hasn't been identified yet, was traveling northbound, and was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment following the crash.

Officials at Emerson Elementary School are being asked to do some explaining after mortally offended parents demanded to know why former porn star Sasha Grey was allowed to commit the sin of reading to a classroom of first-graders. But according to an article at Shake Stir by Lindsay Nader, a heralded local bartender, the spirits of the city still aren't getting the recognition they deserve.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a state judge ruled against Richmond, CA motorist Carl Nelson, who was issued a $103 citation in December of 2009 for placing a call while waiting for a light to turn green.

MOCA's annual gala was Saturday night, and it apparently caused some ruffled feathers. Curated by performance artist Marina Abramovic, the event, entitled "An Artist’s Life Manifesto," started off typically enough, with cocktails, mingling, and polite, art-y conversation. But according to a write-up in the New York Observer by Susan Michals, when guests moved into the fancy dining portion of the evening, they were greeted with a few unwelcome surprises.

A memorial service will be held today for Lance Corporal Mario Arias Jr., the 19-year-old Marine who was murdered in his bunker at Camp Pendleton, reports NBC Los Angeles. Arias was found beaten to death on his bed in the early hours of Sunday morning. Following the attack, the suspect allegedly jumped out a third-story window in what authorities believe was a suicide attempt. The suspect survived and and is being treated for serious injuries.
