As part of President Obama's promise to bring the troops home from Iraq by the end of the year, 500 California National Guard soldiers landed stateside this morning, with 250 of them coming through Los Alamitos. KTLA reports that the planes touched down in Los Alamitos at 5:20 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., carrying soldiers who had been overseas for about a year.

A motorcyclist crashed into a parked car last night, suffering very serious injuries but not harming the people who were sitting in the vehicle, reports the OC Register. The accident happened at about 6:50 p.m. on Newport Boulevard near 26th Street. The motorcyclist, who hasn't been identified yet, was traveling northbound, and was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment following the crash.

Not that we'd ever do this, but it's official: you can't use your cell phone while driving, even if you're stopped at a light. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a state judge ruled against Richmond, CA motorist Carl Nelson, who was issued a $103 citation in December of 2009 for placing a call while waiting for a light to turn green.
