A woman visiting the LA Zoo yesterday decided to climb over ditches and protective barriers in order to commune with the elephants. KTLA reports that the woman, whose name hasn't been released, announced to onlookers that she was "going to go pet the elephants now," then proceeded to climb over several fences and through a ditch or two before reaching the gentle giants.

After responding to a call that a person had been stabbed last night, Upland police arrived at the scene to find an elderly woman lying on the front yard of her home, with the house in flames. KTLA reports that 60-year-old Linda Moreno of Pahrump, Nevada, was taken to a local hospital to be treated, but died of her injuries.

A mother and two children were hit by a flatbed tow truck in an apparent hit-and-run in Placentia yesterday evening, reports City News Service. One of the children, a two-year-old girl, was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange to be treated for cuts and bruises to her feet, legs and face. The woman and the other child weren't treated for any injuries.

After announcing that Vanessa and Kobe Bryant had filed for divorce, the LA Times reported that the Lakers star's soon-to-be ex-wife stands to collect a "windfall" during their settlement. Vanessa could indeed be awarded up to $75 million, but according to a blog post at the Times today, a reader pointed out -- and rightly so -- that the use of the word "windfall" smacked not just a little bit of sexism.

Here's a tip for future burglars: do not steal items equipped with tracking devices. One Christmas thief found this out the hard way. Patrick Krewson is accused of robbing two homes, one on December 25 and another on December 22, after he was found with a stolen iPad that was tracked to his house, according to a statement released by the LA Sheriff's Department today.
