Are we allowed to confess that while we are loving SXSW, we are a little homesick? Notebook Los Angeles talks about their weekend and, yeah, we didn't do any of that. We did have some quality sushi at the hotel restaurant, though. Who knew they could make good sushi in Austin, Texas? They informed us that the fish was procured daily. From where? How expensive must it be to get all that fresh fish...

Maybe Austin is just like LA, after all. Much like how we do when we're home, we missed the premiere of a film but didn't miss the after party. Hooligans, a film about, well, soccer hooligans is probably very good and a lot of fun but we didn't see it. Instead we saw the star of the film, Elijah Wood, do an iPod DJ set at the end of the night at Maggie Mae's...

We're in Austin for SXSW just like folks from Gothamist, SFist, and the newly launched Austinist and here are the greatest hits from the last week of LAist: - We interviewed author Michelle Huneven. - We obsessed about hot dogs. - We went to Clifton's. - We washed our car. - We sang karaoke with porn adult film actresses. - And, we considered the aftermath of the Mayoral election....

Yesterday, we recommended Papa but if you want to get some culture another way you you can go to the opening of Carol Es's Hybrids and Mongrels at the Highways Performance Space and Gallery tonight. The reception is from 6:30 to 8:30 PM tonight. Also tonight, Proper is bringing in one of our favorites, Osunlade, along with seven other DJs and art installations by The HVW8 Crew. 11 PM til the cops come knockin'...

We're in Austin, Texas and haven't left the hotel room yet. It's lovely in here and besides that, we're too busy reading Austinist. Brand new to the gothamist network, Ben Brown (Internet Rockstar) is its editor and, at this point, doing it all by himself. Other gothamist action in Austin this week? Jake Dobkin will be at SXSW and speaking on two panels: How to create a community website and How to create a...

We should be doing laundry in preparation for flying to Austin tomorrow but The Reporter is, heh, reporting that Fox Animation has got the rights to make Dr. Suess's Horton Hears A Who! It's hard to imagine Dr. Seuss in a digital world. It could be amazing or it could be horrible. One thing's for sure, though, we can't wait for when Napoleon meets Horton in an online marketing mashup. It might make no...

...And foreign language and theater arts and hotel management and electronics and over 130 jobs. To follow-up our story from yesterday about Oxnard College's Board of Trustees Meeting in which the college paper and Journalism department were at risk of being shut down, we're saddened to tell you that at the end of the semester, they will be. The Ventura County Star reports that Toni Allen, head of the department, is being laid off...

We feel like we don't see enough local theatre. In particular, local theatre by stage actors instead of the Hollywood plays that are often a showcase for actors hoping to get a TV or a film role. Tomorrow night is an opportunity to get a look at some true stage acting...we think. That's when The Open Fist Theatre Company starts a three weekend run of Papa starring Adrian Sparks. Papa is about an afternoon...

With Bob Hertzberg conceding the race this morning, the May 17th election will now be between Antonio Villaraigosa and Mayor Hahn a rematch of the 2001 runoff. The real story might be the low voter turnout, though, which blogging.la is reporting as 24% of registered voters. Yikes. For much more comprehensive coverage, LA Observed and West LA Online are doing the job....

Calling all our flickr detectives and photo blogging friends, the photobloggies are here. What are the photobloggies? The Photobloggies is an annual award ceremony celebrating photoblogging around the world. Nominations began on Monday and run until Wednesday, March 16th. We'd love it if Los Angeles photoblogs were well represented....
