One of the largest hospitals in Orange County has decided to ban elective abortions, shortly after being purchased by a Catholic hospital group. Last week Hoag Memorial Hospital told its doctors about the decision. The hospital said that the decision was not imposed by new owners and that it was made completely independently of the fact that they are now owned by a Catholic group.

Reese Witherspoon has pled no contest to charges of disorderly conduct related to her arrest in Atlanta on April 19. Her hubby Jim Toth has pleaded guilty to drunk-driving charges from that same night.

This Sunday a church in North Hollywood is hosting a sale of items that belonged to the late Bob Hope and his wife Dolores Hope. Bob Hope died in 2003, but his wife died in 2011 at age 102, and since then, the couple's daughter Linda Hope has been processing everything they left behind and prepping their Toluca Lake home to go on the market.

Police are probing the death of a drunk-driving suspect who died while in the custody of police last month. Mark Courtier, 50, was pulled over at 7:50 p.m. on April 4 on Vermont Avenue in Koreatown, because police suspected he was driving drunk.

Dave Gold—the man behind the 99 Cents Only Stores chain which modernized the concept of a dollar store—died Monday at his home in Los Angeles at 80 from an apparent heart attack. Gold began his career working at a liquor store, but he opened the first 99 Cents Only store in Los Angeles in 1982 after mulling over the concept for a decade.

Rolling Stones have apparently decided to stop into town a little early before kicking off their "50 and Counting" North American tour at the Staples Center on May 3. The band is reported to be playing a surprise show at The Echoplex tonight, and some lucky fans already purchased $20 for the sold-out show at the tiny (especially by Stones' standards!) venue.

The LAPD has announced checkpoints for this weekend, which is just one of many reasons that you shouldn't drink and drive when you go out. The announced checkpoints are in the Valley and Silver Lake (but of course, you can get pulled over for drunk-driving anywhere).
