  • This week's edition of Overheard in L.A. features bits of overheard conversation from local hikes, coffee shops and other places where dreams go to die.
  • This week Paris Jackson was sent to the ER room after cutting her wrists and downing painkillers. Paris was reportedly angered that she wouldn't be able to go to a Marilyn Manson concert, but that was only the tip of the iceberg.
  • In tonight's Extra, Extra, Katie Holmes' feminist turn, life through our windshields and how Kanye West is celebrating his birthday. • A man participating in Los Angeles' annual naked bike ride was punched while he was riding along the Los Angeles River Greenway Trail in Elysian Valley. The incident occurred at 4:40 pm on Saturday afternoon on the bike path along the L.A. River near Knox Avenue.
  • We've put together a timeline of what we know so far in Friday's rampage in Santa Monica that left five people dead including the alleged gunman John Zawahri. The spree included shootings, car-jackings and arson that spanned a mile from his father's residential home in Santa Monica to the Santa Monica Community College library.
  • If you needed some encouragement to get into the Angeles National Forest, tomorrow is the day: you can hike for FREE. Typically, you have to purchase a National Forest Adventure Pass to enjoy the wilderness in our backyards, but the National Forest Service is waiving those fees for National Get Outdoors Day.
  • In tonight's Extra, Extra, Los Angeles has a party, a fond farewell to The Palms and Jackie Chan leaves his mark. Plus: Keep up with us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter: @LAist @LAistFood @LAistSports. You can also find us on Pinterest, Storify, Foursquare, and Instagram (laistpics).
  • A gay club in West Hollywood is suing Ciara for backing out of an appearance at the club tonight, a day before she performs on the main stage at this year's L.A. Pride Festival. The Factory claims in a lawsuit that they agreed to pay Ciara $10,000 to appear at the club tonight (since her contract with L.A. Pride barred her from actually performing).
  • It's never okay to drink and drive, but one of many reasons not to is that you could get stopped at one of the many DUI and driver's license checkpoints that the LAPD conducts. It seems counterintuitive, but police say that announcing checkpoints actually reduces the number of drunk drivers on the road.
  • When the drained and restored Echo Park Lake opens up later this month, the old lotus plants that had disappeared by 2008 have returned thanks to a thief with a green thumb. In 2005, horticulturalist Randy McDonald technically violated the city's municipal code by pilfering a cutting from one of the lotus plants on the lake.
  • Poor Paris Jackson, a rising star in the Jackson clan, has reportedly been hospitalized after a suicide attempt. Debbie Rowe told Entertainment Tonight that Jackson was rushed to the hospital in the early hours of Wednesday after cutting her wrists.
  • In tonight's Extra, Extra, Tyler the Creator takes the blame for the Biebs, booze could get nutritional labels and the truth about women's desire.
