  • A protest against police brutality following the death of Kelly Thomas began around 4 p.m. in Hollywood Saturday night. Monday Night Mission planned to gather 5,000 protesters at the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Vine St.
  • Now you can go to a real place called Dumb Starbucks, which opened Friday in Los Feliz. The store at 1802 Hillhurst Ave. uses the Starbucks corporate logo and looks nearly identical to a real Starbucks, with “dumb” versions of its menu items.
  • A driver went the wrong way on the 60 Freeway early this morning, killing six people and injuring at least one other. The driver went east on the westbound Pomona Freeway north of Diamond Bar Blvd. and caused the multivehicle crash at 4:50 a.m.
  • Demonstrators marched through Hollywood Saturday night in protest of the lethal beating of homeless man Kelly Thomas, and the subsequent trial that led to two officers tried in the beating getting off scot-free. Protesters marched west along Hollywood Blvd. near Vine St., and no arrests were made.
  • An Echo Park parents group has started a petition to build a fence around the playground near Echo Park Lake. The group Echo Park Parents feels that the playground is dangerously close to the lake, citing incidents where children have allegedly almost fallen into the lake or where dogs have come in from the neighboring dog path, creating a hazard for toddlers.
  • A shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake hit near Hollywood Saturday morning. The small temblor happened two miles from Hollywood, three miles from Los Angeles and four miles from West Hollywood and Glendale.
  • If ever there was a reminder that it’s important to do your taxes correctly, it’s this: Michael Jackson’s estate apparently owes the IRS more than $702 million. The IRS has told Jackson’s estate that it owes $505 million in taxes, plus $197 in penalties.
  • Two men and a woman from Palmdale suspected in a string of robberies that started in 2011 were arrested Wednesday, the Lancaster Sheriff’s Department said today. The trio were charged with 72 counts including armed robbery, kidnap for robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon.
  • An unidentified 23-year-old man was shot two times while celebrating his birthday at an apartment complex near USC Friday night. USC students were temporarily told to stay indoors and not open the door to strangers after the non-lethal shooting took place around 11:30 p.m.
  • Two more L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies were indicted Thursday after an ongoing investigation revealed they allegedly punched and kicked a handcuffed and shackled inmate, sprayed him with tear gas and hit him with a flashlight. The indictments Thursday makes it 20 current and former sheriff’s deputies charged with corruption and civil-rights offenses in an ongoing investigation.
