A woman was killed in Long Beach this morning when she stepped outside an apartment complex to grab her son's diaper bag.

Jazzmine Wash, 23, had just dropped her 3-year-old son off at a family's member's apartment around 6:20 a.m. Thursday, but she had forgotten to get his diaper bag. When she stepped outside the gated apartment complex, she was shot several times in the upper body, according to The Long Beach Press-Telegram.

A witness reported hearing six shots. She was pronounced dead at the scene, officials told The Los Angeles Times.

It happened at Walnut Avenue near 5th Street not far from where three men were shot and wounded this Sunday at 4th Street and Orange Avenue. Residents said they were shocked by today's shooting. Family members and even an apartment manager didn't want to identify themselves for fear of retaliation.

The manager told the Press-Telegram, "She was so nice. She didn't deserve this. She was always so respectful. She was a mother. She has a little boy."

Long Beach Police said they do not have a motive in the shooting. You can contact detectives with tips about the case at (562) 570-7244.
