Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

If you follow (the person who ghost-tweets for?) the Mayor of L.A. on Twitter, you may have noticed, as LA Observed did, that he was happy to be at home after his vacation in Africa. "Good to be back in LA!" he remarked. While he was gone, Antonio Villaraigosa missed the mega-memorial that brought in some mad tourism cash, some LAPD overtime, and some raised eyebrows--although there were still a few Twitter-style peeps during the break about his office's fundraising efforts to help the cause.

But... did Villaraigosa miss his new Miss, aka KTLA's Lu Parker? Or was she with him? Well, there's no official word, but, if you trust your Tweets (and noticed she was absent from our airwaves) Parker was tickled to have "Met Dr. Jane Goodall" last week. Where might someone meet Goodall? Hmmm, perhaps at the Jane Goodall institute. In Africa. Ahem.

(BTW, the "Myr"'s Press Sec'y, Matt Szabo, denies that Villaraigosa doesn't, err, Tweet himself.)

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
