President Trump questions the integrity of elections, points to LA and California as examples

The topic:

President Donald Trump used a primetime address to the nation Thursday to elevate his yearslong push to raise doubts about the legitimacy of U.S. elections and dispute his 2020 loss — this time, to justify his push to pass a strict voter ID bill. His allegations of influence and interference, which focused on China, didn’t include key context. Nor did he produce evidence that votes had been manipulated or that the election outcome had been altered.

Catch up: The president has long disputed his 2020 loss, despite all evidence pointing to it being valid. He notably did not call the 2016 or 2024 elections into question during this speech.

California in the crossfire: Without raising specific allegations, the president noted that California’s ballot counting process for the recent June primary took weeks to complete, saying, “I wonder what they were doing. This is worse than any third-world country.”

California’s ballot counting: As LAist has reported repeatedly: Things take a while here largely because California has worked hard to expand the ways people can vote.
