The 40th Los Angeles Marathon is Sunday (March 16), which means runners and festivities will take over many of L.A’s streets.

Whether you plan to join the crowd, or drive to the coast for a beach day, or were planning a bike ride across the city, every Angeleno should brace for street closures and tow-away zones snaking their way throughout the city.

Need to know more? We got you.

  • Main course closures: These streets will be closed at various times during the day. Runners will follow some of them for the race, and others intersect with the marathon path.
  • Freeway ramps to the 110, 101, and 405: Onramps and offramps will be closed throughout the day. Be sure to check this timetable before you hop on the freeway.
  • Downtown and beyond: Several major corridors in downtown Los Angeles and along the marathon route will be inaccessible during the event. Expect closures on key thoroughfares as the race weaves its way through.
  • Timing matters: Road closures are set to begin in the early morning and will continue into the mid-afternoon, coinciding with the marathon’s schedule. The official page for the L.A. Marathon offers a comprehensive map of all affected streets.

Tips for navigating marathon day

  • Alternate routes: Real-time navigation apps may offer suggested detours that help you avoid the congested areas.
  • Consider public transit: With many drivers likely to face delays, using LA’s public transportation system or ride-sharing services could save you time and headache on marathon day.
  • Plan ahead: Review the above road closure map on the marathon’s website to know exactly which streets are impacted.
