Teen Couple Shot and Killed in Wilmington

Two teenagers, a boy and girl, were shot in Wilmington, CA last night just after 7:00 p.m.
NBC Los Angeles reports that the couple, Meldrick Melgoza and Carolina Ramirez, were were walking on the 500 block of Bay View Avenue when someone walked up to them and fired several rounds, then walked away.
Both teenagers were 16 years old. It's not clear what the motive was, although there are conflicting reports as to whetner Melgoza was involved in a gang. Police say they don't think the shooting was gang-related, but Ramirez' uncle told NBC that he believed the boy may have been affiliated.
He tells police that he always suggest Ramirez be careful: "'Don’t go in the streets late or just stay at home or go with your mom,'" he reports telling her. "'Just get a ride or something.'"
