Some L Words

Each week we're compelled to watch the "L Word," motivated by the same impulses that force motorists in traffic to gape at a car wreck on the freeway. We just can't help ourselves.

We keep searching in vain for the real Los Angeles to make her appearance in this Showtime series about the lives and loves of a crew L.A.-based lesbians and their pals. After all, LA is an L Word, too.

So far we haven't seen anything too recognizable--though that schizo Jenny is annoying enough to reside in LA (and we're loving Sandra Bernhard's guest stint as Jenny's sadistic writing instructor). We also think the crazy haircuts sported by Shane and Alice look more appropriate on Fraggle Rock than at The Palms.

Happily, Teresa over at In Sequence: a weblog on the sequential art, helps us make a connection. She writes on her blog, "In case you were watching "The L Word" last night, let me point out that I've previously blogged about Lisa Yuskavage, the painter discussed in the scene between Tina and the Creepy Lawyer as they tried to estimate the value of the couple's household." The espisode repeats tonight at 10 PM on Showtime.

We're not surprised to learn that Lisa Cholodenko directed the 3/13/05 episode, entitled "Lynch Pin," as the filmmaker will engage artist Lisa Yuskavage in conversation at the UCLA Hammer Museum of Art on Wednesday, May 25th at 7 PM.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
