Shipping Container Falls Off Truck And Crushes Bicyclist To Death
A bicyclist was killed when a large shipping container somehow fell off a truck and crushed him.
The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday evening when the bicyclist was riding down Santa Fe Avenue near the intersection with Warnock Way in Carson, which is near the border of Long Beach. After a truck went under a railroad bridge, the shipping container fell off its flatbed and crushed a bicyclist who was riding on the sidewalk. "I just heard a big boom and it felt like an earthquake," Daniel Flores, who lives nearby, told the Press-Telegram. "It shook the house a little bit."
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, and KTLA reports that he has since been identified by authorities as 51-year-old Robert Castorena of Long Beach. The incident remains under investigation, but authorities think it is likely the container was pushed off the truck after it hit the bridge.
