Seven Questions: Laura Day, Self-Help Author/Intuitionist to the Stars

LA has a diverse cast of characters. Whether it's the characters with stirring stories or interesting occupations or the people who are just simply characters, this town has them all. In an effort to get to know some of those characters a little better, we've created "Seven Questions with..." If you have a suggestion for a future Seven Questions subject send us an email.
Today's subject is Laura Day.
Self-help author and intuitionist to the stars, Day is back with a new book aimed at teaching the world all of the tricks she has been using to help her very high profile clients for years. Laura has cemented herself as an invaluable tool and consultant to her fans in the entertainment industry (think Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Ryan Kavanaugh), the financial world (think those titans who control the largest institutions and funds, which will remain nameless), doctors and surgeons, and even city planners.
How to Rule the World From Your Couch, is Laura's seventh book and it shows readers how to harness their own intuition, take control of their life and challenges and follow the "gut" - and do it all from any time and any place.
1) You tell the future, you go into other peoples thoughts, you fix your body with your brain and you say we all can do this. Do you know how strange you are?
I think it is stranger that people walk around, sending out messages, fighting with themselves, and walking into walls! We use so much energy to make a mess of things. I love How to Rule the World from Your Couch because it uncovers the “strangeness” in everyone. I might be strange, but I’m not alone!
2) Why did you call your book How to Rule the World from Your Couch?
I named it that because I think that is the secret to life. The military strategist Sun Tzu said, “a battle is won before it is ever fought”. We spend too much time exhausted by fighting life and not enough time letting intuition pave the way. Finding our route gives us the means to get there-- 95 percent of life is created in the planning. You can use intuition to give you the information to make contact with the world around you, trouble shoot before trouble happens, and to lure opportunities to you while you are reading a novel. I really think that it is tragic that people work so hard only to be met with disappointment. There is another way!
3) What I want to know is how does a company even think of using you, let alone pay you $10,000 for the privilege?
Business is ruthless- they need to use what works. Intuition gives a company or a person an advantage in the marketplace. The only people who don’t want that are masochists. Why do something if you can’t survive doing it?! I love the phrase “a company with a heart” because a company is like a functional human and will survive at all costs. We as consumers can make companies have a heart by talking with our dollars. I’m just a civilian, but I only work with companies who have a heart.
Now of course these companies have my book and they may not need me anymore!
4) You have a lot of celebrity clients, but also business people and scientists who say they use your work. What’s that about?
Anyone who is successful is already intuitive. Their job is to keep their intuition focused on their goals, which is not always easy when you are having a bad hair day. I think that these “intellectuals” feel comfortable speaking about my work because I am not Guru Day. I want people to steal this book and use it in the world. When that happens then I will learn to write fiction and wear mismatched clothes and (hopefully) raise some grandchildren. Frankly I’m in no hurry for that- my son Samson will be relieved! When you are juggling a lot of balls it is good to have another intuitive eye.

5) Do you have a motto?
From Langston Hughes:
“I play it cool, I dig all jive, and that’s the reason I stay alive.
My motto as I live and learn is dig and be dug in return.
And also, it never hurts to carry your umbrella and to say your prayers, just in case.
6) You have written 6 books. Which ones do you use in your life?
The fat 2 year old in a famine is not an intellectual or experienced or lucky. They are traumatized into using their intuition to survive. I had a lot of early trauma and needed the correct information to take the right actions, even before I was a formed, thinking individual. Simply put, I am How to Rule the World from Your Couch. I had the double blessing of early childhood trauma and a lot of good psychiatry, so I can function and write about the gifts of intuition. This book gives everyone the gifts without the trauma.
I use The Circle workbook everyday to keep my goals on track and to keep my subconscious from running me into walls. When I start having problems I do Welcome to your Crisis, except when I want to wallow in my misery, or “self-cut” as my agent, Jennifer Walsh describes it. This summer I had a crisis and I refused to do the book. I was in Italy and didn’t have a copy anyway, which was my excuse. One of my students, who is a litigator, scanned the book and emailed it to me. I use my students as intuitives and she was tired of looking at the same miserable questions over and over again. I did the pages for my type (anxiety) and within two days I was bored with my crisis and shopping and eating like people should when in Italy.
7) What advice do you have for our readers?
-If it looks like magic it probably doesn’t work. Clicking your heels three times only works if you are in Oz.
-If it works it takes discipline.
-Know your goals. If you don’t know your destination how do you expect to get there? Would you drive without using GPS or a map?
-Document those flashes of insight that come from left field. They are your genius.
-Use your sleep to solve problems and interact with the world around you in a different way. Write down what you want to accomplish before you go to sleep.
-Work in a community.
-You have to believe in something for it to work. Try your tools, document your results and accept only verifiable proof. Skepticism is good. Rigidity is not.
