Racist, Sexist Flier Calling Asian Women 'C*nts' Ignites Outrage At UCLA, USC

Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

A horribly racist and sexist flier denouncing Asian women as "cunts" and "only dating honkie white boy" has sparked outrage at UCLA and USC.

The flier, which was sent anonymously on Feb. 1 to UCLA's Asian American Studies Center and USC's Asian Pacific American Student Services Department, appears to condemn Asian women for dating white men, according to the Daily Bruin. The crude and grammatically poor language in the flier includes lines like "Asian cunt sluts have low self-esteem up xi ass" and "Mexican womyn don't worship honkie white boy like Asian cunts do!"

"This is freedom of speech! It's not a hate crime!" The flier reads.

Mary Ho, director of the Asian Pacific American Student Services Department at USC, penned an open letter addressing the flier, part of which read:

Asian Pacific American Student Services did not want to give legitimacy to this individual or individuals full of hate. However, we feel the need to make a statement that is clear and direct. We will not tolerate such harmful, derogatory and racist slurs directed at the Asian Pacific American community or at any communities. The Trojan community prides itself on creating a campus of support and inclusion and we will continue to promote an environment that affirms all identities.

The messages are reminiscent of another string of racist fliers posted at UCLA in 2012, which called Asian women "Honkie white-boy worshipping Whores." Indeed, this new flier contains the line, "Wez agree with da UCLA sign! Word up dawg!"

The Asian Pacific Coalition condemned this recent letter, saying:

Every year, at least one discriminatory and racially biased incident occurs, and many more go unreported. To allow these attacks to remain unaddressed, whether they are intended to hurt or draw attention, is to tacitly endorse the marginalization of our community, to accept being painted as perpetual foreigners, and to allow for the exotification and objectification of women of color. These racially biased incidents cannot continue.

Sparked by the flier, about 50 students gathered at UCLA yesterday to hold a rally against racial and gender discrimination, the Daily Bruin reports. UCLA Chancellor Gene Block has expressed his "disgust" at the flier.

The flier has once again placed a magnifying glass on the ugly racism against Asian-American students. In 2011, student Alexandra Wallace posted a YouTube video where she spouted off racist remarks about Asian students in the library that went viral.

Chancellor Block has asked campus police to investigate the flier, the Times reports.
