Man Involved In SWAT Shootout Facing 19 Counts Of Attempted Murder

The Los Angeles County District Attorney has announced that Jose Rauda, 34, will be charged with 19 counts of attempted murder on LAPD officers and 27 additional charges following a shootout in South Los Angeles last month. Rauda's additional charges include assault with a firearm upon a peace officer, assault with a firearm, assaulting a police animal causing injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon.
"On June 15, police were about to start a probation search in the 400 block of East 49th Street, when gunfire erupted from inside a house," a release from the LAPD states. "Several officers returned fire and Rauda was allegedly seen running from the home. No one was wounded."
A search for Rauda later led authorities to a K-9 shot in the hind leg. Then, after a nearly five-hour search, SWAT officers discovered Rauda, who allegedly opened fire and struck an officer in the front portion of his helmet. A shootout ensued but no one was injured by the gunfire. Rauda ultimately surrendered from his location in the laundry room of a neighboring house.
Rauda was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, but it has been delayed to August 1, the LAPD told LAist. Rauda faces a possible maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
