Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

There are many excellent reasons to not drink and drive, and just one of them is that you could get caught at one of four checkpoints that LAPD is planning for the weekend.

There will be a checkpoint on Friday at Western Avenue at 39th Street from 6 pm until midnight.

There will be another checkpoint on Friday at Hollywood Boulevard at Orange Grove Avenue from 8 pm until 2 am on Saturday.

The third checkpoint on Friday will be in Silver Lake at Hyperion Avenue at Scotland Street from 8 pm until 2 am.

On Saturday, there will be a checkpoint in Van Nuys at Roscoe Boulevard at Gloria Avenue from 8 pm until 2 am.

LAPD and other police agencies do like to announce these checkpoints, because it reminds would-be drunk drivers that police officers are on the lookout for them (and not just at checkpoints!). It seems counterintuitive, but the state says publicizing checkpoints actually reduces incidents of drunk driving by 20 percent.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
