Congress has cut federal funding for public media — a $3.4 million loss for LAist. We count on readers like you to protect our nonprofit newsroom. Become a monthly member and sustain local journalism.

By Ana Bustilloz/Special to LAist

* * *Every Saturday, LAist will feature an adoptable cat and dog from a different local shelter or accredited 501c3 rescue organization. Take a look at these furry bundles and consider giving them a home, or forward their faces to friends who may be interested. * * *

This week's pets are from Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles. spcaLA is an independent, nonprofit animal welfare organization serving Southern California since 1877. Donations run programs and services including Cruelty Investigation, Disaster Animal Response Team, Humane Education and a variety of shelter services. There is no national SPCA, parent organization, or umbrella group that provides financial support. Each SPCA and Humane Society is a completely unrelated organization.

Bibi (11-02501)

Got catnip? I am a very sweet 5 year-old girl who loves to be brushed and cuddled with. Don’t let my calm demeanor fool you though, I love to play! Since loud noises and quick movements frighten me, I would do best in a home with older children. Visit me here at the shelter and see how snuggly I can be!

Bibi is available at the spcaLA South Bay Pet Adoption Center at 12910 Yukon Avenue in Hawthorne (310) 676-1149.

Dewey (11-03196)

Dewey is a 4 year-old Long Haired Dachshund. He is a jolly and playful little guy who has tons of personality. He walks well on a leash and knows sit. He gets along fine with other dogs but should be the only dog in the household. He also likes kids. Come by and see if Dewey is the right dog for you.

Dewey is available at spcaLA P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village at 7700 East Spring Street in Long Beach
(562) 570-7722.

As Editor-in-Chief of our newsroom, I’m extremely proud of the work our top-notch journalists are doing here at LAist. We’re doing more hard-hitting watchdog journalism than ever before — powerful reporting on the economy, elections, climate and the homelessness crisis that is making a difference in your lives. At the same time, it’s never been more difficult to maintain a paywall-free, independent news source that informs, inspires, and engages everyone.

Simply put, we cannot do this essential work without your help. Federal funding for public media has been clawed back by Congress and that means LAist has lost $3.4 million in federal funding over the next two years. So we’re asking for your help. LAist has been there for you and we’re asking you to be here for us.

We rely on donations from readers like you to stay independent, which keeps our nonprofit newsroom strong and accountable to you.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, press freedom is at the core of keeping our nation free and fair. And as the landscape of free press changes, LAist will remain a voice you know and trust, but the amount of reader support we receive will help determine how strong of a newsroom we are going forward to cover the important news from our community.

Please take action today to support your trusted source for local news with a donation that makes sense for your budget.

Thank you for your generous support and believing in independent news.
