The Olympic Games will be played across a vast swath of Southern California. Only two events still need playing sites.

The International Olympic Committee and LA28, the host city's organizing committee, laid out recent updates Tuesday:

  • Baseball will be played in Dodger Stadium
  • Beach volleyball will play at Alamitos Beach, in Long Beach
  • Cricket will head to the fairgrounds in Pomona (cricket fields are about 150 yards long, so you need a big space)
  • Indoor volleyball is planned for the Honda Center in Anaheim
  • Squash will make its Olympic debut at Universal Studios (yet to be determined: will it be available on the tour? Maybe in place of Fast & Furious – Supercharged?)
  • Surfing is slated for Trestles Beach in San Clemente

The beach volleyball choice of Alamitos Beach ends a nearly decade-long campaign by the city of Santa Monica to host the event, a statement from the city said. But the city and Olympic organizers couldn't find their way around financial issues: A a study found hosting the event “could result in a loss of approximately $1.45 million” for Santa Monica, whereas if the city declined to host beach volleyball, “it stands to gain $10.65 million in fiscal benefits.”

The two venues still to be determined are soccer’s preliminary rounds and mountain biking. The Paralympic venues have yet to be announced, too.

That’s a lot of places to get around

Organizers have promised that the 2028 Olympics will be a "transit-first Games," but there's still a long way to go on those infrastructure projects.

For 2028 Olympics, LA Metro may branch out into ocean services

In the wake of this week's announcements — and the fact that Long Beach will now host a significant number of events — L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn has proposed that L.A. Metro establish a short water taxi route from San Pedro to Long Beach during the Games.

A spokesperson for Metro told LAist via email that the agency has not previously operated a water taxi or other water transportation, nor done a feasibility study, which Hahn said she plans to ask for.

Such a study would involve any relevant regulatory authorities, the spokesperson said. Long Beach Transit already has some summer water taxi operations under their brand.
