Topline:

L.A. County’s pool season just got a whole lot longer. All public pools will now be open six days a week through the end of October, instead of the usual 10-week swimming season.

Why it matters: L.A. County Parks and Recreation has hired 610 lifeguards — 356 new hires, and 254 returning — for the season.

Some pools also have new lighting, including the Don Knabe Regional Park pool in Cerritos, so people can still swim as the sun rises later and sets earlier in the fall, according to L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office.

Why now: Hahn will be hosting a pool party at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Don Knabe Regional Park with Norma García-Gonzalez, the director of L.A. County Parks and Recreation, to celebrate the extended season.

The details:

  • “Everybody Swims” is available from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays
  • “Parks After Dark” is open from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, as well as 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays
  • Lap swimming is available from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. every weekday, as well as 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturdays
  • Water exercise hours, which are free for people 65 years or older and for those with disabilities, is being offered from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. every weekday, as well as 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturdays
