National Night Out (NNO), the country's annual nighttime anti-crime time, has been a community-based national effort in crime prevention since 1984. What started as 2.5 million people in 400 communities across 23 states has grown into 37 million people in 15,100 communities from all 50 states by last year's count.

On Tuesday August 2, the LAPD 77th Division in conjunction with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks will be hosting an NNO event from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Van News Recreation Center with food, games, arts & crafts, free basketball clinic and more.

There are also block parties, unity walks, neighborhood watch, peace rallies, potlucks, open houses, picnics, movies and more throughout the region. Check the complete LAPD schedule of events and the NNO map for other registered communities across the country.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive from readers like you will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
