It only took twenty years, but the LAPD says that it has recovered OJ Simpson's 1968 Heisman Trophy that was snatched from a USC display case.LAPD isn't offering many details about the case except to say that the trophy was recovered last month by detectives who were assigned to the LAPD's Art Theft Detail, according to the Associated Press. Detectives went to court seeking a search warrant for the MetroPCS phone records of a man connected to the case, whose name hasn't been released, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Detectives say the case is still open and they're asking the public for help cracking open the case—and help finding Simpson's jersey that was stolen at the same time as the trophy. The trophy was USC's copy of the statue, and it was stolen from the athletic department in July 1994, a month after the infamous Bronco chase. Simpson sold his copy of the trophy to help pay for all those court costs he incurred after his murder trial.
At the time of the theft, LAPD believed that two thieves were responsible, but no thieves were identified.
