The Long Beach breakwater has been the focus of intense debate, in part because of its detrimental effects on the environment.
But in the decades since it was built, it's become home to a diverse array of marine wildlife.
As city officials and the Army Corps of Engineers weigh their options for the future of the offshore barrier, one option could radically change its role in the local ecosystem.
