LAX airport taxi fares increased
Desperate for cash, the Los Angeles City Council Tuesday approved a deal that would increase passenger surcharges from $2.50 to $4 a trip at Los Angeles International Airport.
The City Council approved extending for 10 years a contract with Authorized Taxicab Supervision.
“The company that won this concession actually was the one that proposed the least amount for that surcharge," Councilwoman Janice Hahn said. Hahn heads the Trade, Commerce and Tourism Committee that examined the fare increase.
Authorized Taxicab Supervision oversees nine cab companies at the airport.
A city controller’s report four years ago found that ATS improperly documented expenditures and failed to adequately report work-related injuries.
“I’m confident that each and every concern and issue that the controller brought up has been addressed," Hahn said.
Under the deal, the city will nearly quadruple its take from airport taxis from $700,000 to $2.7 million a year.
