Former President Bill Clinton Monday put his political muscle behind Gavin Newsom’s bid for governor.

During a joint appearance at Los Angeles City College, Clinton praised the San Francisco mayor’s environmental policies.

Bill Clinton: "San Francisco may be the greenest city in the entire country and it’s because of his leadership. They are going to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2014."

Newsom’s expected to face state Attorney General Jerry Brown in next year’s race for the Democratic nomination for governor. Seventy-year-old Brown, who was governor in the late 1970s and '80s, leads Newsom in opinion polls and fundraising in a race that’s still nine months away.

In endorsing Newsom, Clinton made no mention of his 1992 clash with Brown. Both were running for the Democratic nomination for president. Brown accused then-Arkansas Governor Clinton of funneling state money to his wife Hillary's law firm. Clinton shot back that Brown did not belong on the same stage with him, and mocked Brown's "$1,500 suit."
