CHP boosting checkpoints, patrols during Thanksgiving weekend

The California Highway Patrol says its officers will be out in full force over the Thanksgiving weekend and will be on the lookout for just about everything, from people driving under the influence, to speeding, to major collision factors like unsafe lane changes and erratic driving.

The California Highway Patrol will be out in full force through the holiday weekend.
All available officers will be on patrol across California. The "maximum enforcement period" includes all counties.
The CHP is trying to reduce traffic deaths after 45 people died in crashes last Thanksgiving.
"Drinking and driving is a big problem all the time, but especially during these times during the holidays when we're enjoying time with family and friends," CHP Officer Chad Guin told KPCC.
Officers will be on the lookout for just about everything, from people driving under the influence, to speeding, to major collision factors like unsafe lane changes and erratic driving, according to CHP Officer Jose Barrios.
Officers arrested about 1,000 people statewide for driving under the influence during this period last year, according to the CHP.
Barrios said checkpoints will be set up at various points on Southland freeways.

Police departments are also setting up checkpoints, and highway patrol agencies nationwide are stepping up patrols along Interstate 40.
The CHP crackdown ends Sunday at midnight.
