California publishes city, county employees' compensation online
The state government launched a new online site today that lists the pay for all city and county employees. The move comes as a result of the trouble in the City of Bell.
The new page on the State controller’s website lists the salary, pension benefits and other compensation for more than 594,000 city and county positions.
It also shows whether an employee holds more than one position. That’s one way for local government officials to boost their incomes without raising red flags.
Controller John Chiang says the site is intended to provide Californians with information that can prevent salary abuses - like the ones that apparently took place in Bell.
But there’s still a lot of information missing from the controller’s new website. Dozens of local governments failed to comply with the controller’s order to report how they compensate employees.
The controller’s posted a list of all the city and county governments that missed the deadline.
