Andre Birotte sworn in as US Attorney in Los Angeles
The former inspector general of the Los Angeles Police Commission took the oath Thursday as the federal government’s top prosecutor in Los Angeles.
U.S. District Judge Terry Hatter administered the oath to Birotte during a private ceremony at a downtown L.A. federal courthouse. The 43-year-old son of Haitian immigrants becomes the first African American to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.
Birotte said in a statement that it’s his “great pleasure” to lead “one of the nation’s premier public law firms.”
As U.S. Attorney for the Central District, Birotte oversees all federal prosecutions in L.A., Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.
U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein recommended him to President Obama, who offered Birotte a four-year appointment.
Birotte, a graduate of Pepperdine Law School, began his professional career as a public defender. He later worked as a federal prosecutor for the office he monitors now, and as inspector general for the L.A.P.D. when that department was subject to federally mandated reforms.
