1 dead, 1 hurt in car crash at Southern Californa raceway
Authorities say a woman was killed and another person seriously injured after their car crashed at a raceway in Indio.
A Riverside County coroner's statement says the 21-year-old woman was a passenger in a coupe that hit a concrete barrier head-on Sunday at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. The woman was killed during a recreational ride that was not part of a sanctioned race.
County fire officials say the driver was airlifted to a hospital with major injuries. Neither person's name was released.
The raceway, about halfway between Los Angeles and Phoenix, opened in 2010.
According to its website, Chuckwalla Valley allows the public to buy memberships and drives on its winding raceway through about 2½ miles of desert.
Phone messages left with raceway officials were not immediately returned.
