Did you get a little jeals of your Facebook friends in other states who bought Powerball lottery tickets and stood a chance of winning nearly $580 million this week? Or were you one of the Californians who drove or flew to one of the 42 participating states to get your chance at the jackpot? Well, Californians, you only have to wait until next spring to get your ticket in your home state. Thursday, the California Lottery Commission "unanimously voted to formally adopt the multi-state mega-jackpot lottery game" Powerball, according to the Lottery Commission's site.

The Commission came to the conclusion, following "extensive research" (As in: Dang, this lottery is hella popular, we wonder), that Powerball "would enhance the organization’s current portfolio of games" here in the Golden State.

Feeling lucky? Powerball ticket sales begin in California on April 8, 2013, and the first draw is April 10, 2013. Tickets are $2 a pop.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
