Fans of Fresh & Easy might be getting a store near them soon. Next week, two stores will open with three more openings in early April, the company announced today. Of particular note will be the Central and Adams location in South Los Angeles, where fresh and healthier options are needed. A recent CB Richard Ellis study found that the neighborhood lacks core amenities such as grocery, dining and entertainment businesses, forcing residents to travel up to 10 miles for better options. In turn, that's cost an estimated $400 million in sales leakage within the city-region's economy

Efforts are being put into revitalizing the historic Central Avenue corridor. The Thursday farmers market has reopened and a new satellite city hall debuted last month.

Along with the South L.A. opening next Wednesday, a Fresh & Easy will also open in Whittier. Then on April 7th, grand openings are planned for Baldwin Park (Francisquito & Puente), Downey (Downey & Firestone) and Burbank (Olive & Verdugo). No word yet on the Encino location.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
