The LA County Fair Starts Today! Go Eat Something Battered! And Deep-Fried! On a Stick!

Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

Photo by Elise Thompson for LAistPut on your sneakers and suncreen! Fill your pockets with Tums! Today marks the opening day of the LA County Fair, which will run from Sept. 5-Oct. 4th this year, a week longer than usual.

You can sample 300 "culinary delights" at the Fair. This year the ever-popular Chicken Charlie is creating the "Zucchini Weenie". It's a zucchini hollowed out, stuffed with a hot dog, then battered and fried. This year also sees the debut of the horrifying yet fascinating "Meat Lover's Ice Cream" - soft serve ice cream with dark chocolate deep fried bacon. Yes, we said bacon.

Watch for "The Outlaw Grill," which is 83 feet long bumper to bumper and can cook 1,500 turkey legs at once. For a massive dessert, try newcomer "The Colossal Gelato" a full pint of gelato ice cream in a 16-inch waffle cone or giant CBS Cupcakes from their distinctive white, black and pink trailer.

If you still have room, destroy your stomach with cheese fries and fried food before you get your drink on at the Wine Tasting Tent.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
