Truth matters. Community matters. Your support makes both possible. LAist is one of the few places where news remains independent and free from political and corporate influence. Stand up for truth and for LAist. Make your year-end tax-deductible gift now.

We all know the drill when it comes to eating at East Hollywood favorite, Sqirl: wait an eternity in line and then scout out open tables like an hawk. It's certainly not the easiest experience, but soon there will be a quicker way to get delicious Sqirl dishes with the addition of a takeaway place next-door.

Sqirl's 34-year-old chef-owner, Jessica Koslow, told the L.A. Times that she hopes to open Sqirl Away at the end of August. It'll be located right next door to Sqirl and offer takeaway dishes. However, don't expect her famed rice bowl to be on the menu as it doesn't exactly transport well. Instead, she'll be developing new dishes that are better suited as portable meals. The New York Times reports that we should expect items like tapioca onion puffs and potted baccalà with flowers.

"We can’t just do rotisserie chicken and sell it to people," Koslow told the New York Times. "The food has to be more like terrines and rillettes and perfectly composed salads with multiple kinds of herbs and greens."

Another perk is that Sqirl Away will be open until 7 p.m., 3 hours later than when Sqirl closes, so that means dinner items could be in the mix.

You come to LAist because you want independent reporting and trustworthy local information. Our newsroom doesn’t answer to shareholders looking to turn a profit. Instead, we answer to you and our connected community. We are free to tell the full truth, to hold power to account without fear or favor, and to follow facts wherever they lead. Our only loyalty is to our audiences and our mission: to inform, engage, and strengthen our community.

Right now, LAist has lost $1.7M in annual funding due to Congress clawing back money already approved. The support we receive before year-end will determine how fully our newsroom can continue informing, serving, and strengthening Southern California.
